A Letter to Daughters || From a father to his daughters, this letter was written to provide inspiration, encouragement, and love to women everywhere!

My Dear Daughter,

I can see the endless struggles with your body. What others made light of in childhood, you still carry with you wherever you go.

I witnessed the tears of sadness you’ve cried when your first love broke your heart. And I also saw the tears of joy when you first said yes to the man of your dreams.

I glimpsed the bright-eyed girl, marching for the hope of a better tomorrow. And that same girl refusing to cut her hair for fear of being ugly.

And how a certain outfit made you courageous. Yet, now it lies at the bottom of your closet because it no longer gives satisfaction.

The girl I see had great aspirations for her life. Though, she had found herself on a different route than planned.

She became broken down by her worldly pursuits, twisted and caught among the thicket. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.1

You still rely upon others for stability and hope. Even now, you seek others for confirmation of your worthiness and magnificence.

Oh, I see the woman who one day woke up with a home, a husband, and children, wondering where the time had gone and worrying about tomorrow. I see how she struggles to make ends meet, lying awake at night with endless thoughts, trying to not let outside judgements deter her spirit.

You, my precious girl, are beautiful and worthy. You are strong and courageous.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?2

The life you portray online doesn’t do justice to the person you truly are. The real girl I know lost her innocence in a fruitless relationship, lost a loved one without saying goodbye, and lost her way on the path I had laid out for her.

The real girl I know almost divorced her husband, left her children in the car for a moment of peace, and was too exhausted to enjoy any part of her day. She wanted all to see her best, displaying her successes for the world to reassure and admire.

But I know your heart. I know your difficulties and challenges.

And I know your insecurities and aspirations. I see the genuine you.

Exquisite girl, you are uniquely made for a purpose. One day your body will fade, the people you love will move forward in their own lives, and your role will change.

daughters: changing seasons

Soon, you will realize there is more for you. And when you do, I will be here as I have always been, for I still have plans for you.

Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.3

You, daughter, are more than any version of yourself you’d post for others to praise. And you are more than what others have criticized and blamed you for.

You, especially, are more than your scars and imperfections that you carry with you still. Even your flaws are worth more than any prized diamond.

Can you imagine what I must think of your strengths, if I think so highly of your faults? Please do not hide your trueness for finite things.

Please do not seek rest where there is none. Expect more, for I am more than any person could ever give or take way from you.

I am more than legalism and riches. And I am more than fame and status.

I want more for you because I am unlimited and unconditional. Above all, I want you to know that I will always be patiently waiting for you, dear girl.

You are the light of the world4… because you are My daughter.

  1. Breathtaking and so beautiful. It is beyond overwhelming to know that these are truths for each one of us. I didn’t know I needed this letter today until after I finished reading it! Thank you for the reminder and inspiration! God bless!

  2. This one got me! I lost my Dad over 5 years ago and I so long to hear his voice and encouragements again. This is just what I needed to remind me I still have a Father who loves and cares for me! Thank you!!

    • I’m really sorry for your loss, Annette! I’m so glad, however, that you have been reminded of God’s love and care for you even in the midst of your longing for your father’s voice!

  3. I loved your post! You wrote everything that I have been talking with my soon-to-be 13-year old about here lately. This not only applies to her, but to me as well. You had mentioned about your daughter being “a light to the world.” I tell my daughter every day that she is my “sunshine.”

  4. Thank you for this sweet reminder to women – and to who God is in the midst of all our concerns, worries, fears, joys, heartaches, etc. May I be filled with the fullness and peace of the Lord so that I can model to my daughter what that looks like!

  5. Beautiful! God does know our hearts in ways we don’t and he’s seen all our joys and our difficulties. Praying I will continue to run to him instead of others to be my comfort and strength!
